As we are created by God in and for community, so does the grace of God create among God’s people a community united by the cross of Christ. The cross subverts all worldly notions of merit, power and success. It is a powerful revelation of God’s solidarity with suffering humanity that upends and unsettles our presumptions. It is in and through the crucified Christ that we as Lutherans understand God and our witness to the world, for “true theology and recognition of God are in the crucified Christ. … It does one no good to recognize God in divine glory and majesty, unless one recognizes God in the humility and shame of the cross.”

Martin Luther, “Heidelberg Disputation,” 1518
