Sunday, Aug. 13, is the final check-out day for the OSL Library’s “Build a Better World” Summer Reading Program. Kids (through high school) have been building their domino city by checking out books since June 4. Your checkout receipt will make you eligible for a $5 weekly prize drawing. At the program’s completion, the two youths who have read the most books and accrued the most domino city dots will receive a grand prize!
The Market for Hunger is back! Beginning on Aug. 13, produce will be available every Sunday, from 9:45 to 11:00 a.m., for a freewill donation, which will be used to fight hunger. Coffee will be for sale at that time, too. Produce is donated by local growers; if you have fresh garden produce to contribute, bring it to the Market for Hunger table in The Gathering Place on Sunday mornings.
Worship services this September will feature a three-week miniseries focusing on key themes from the movie The Shack. Prepare for the series by attending one of these showings of the movie, in the HolyWord Theater: Wednesday, Aug. 16, following Summer Blast worship (approximately 7:10 p.m.), Saturday, Sept. 9, at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 10, at 12:30 p.m. (pizza and salad lunch will be served for those who RSVP to the OSL Library by noon on Thursday, Sept. 7), or Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 6:00 p.m. Popcorn will be provided at all four showings.
Don’t miss the season’s final OSL Summer Blast, this Wednesday, Aug. 16! The theme will be “Farmer’s Market.” Food will be served starting at 5:00 p.m., with fun and games at 5:30. A simple outdoor worship service will follow, at 6:30.
Beyond Addiction Book Study Group will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 16, in the Caring Ministries area, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., to discuss chapter 8, “Goals (and Problems).” Beyond Addiction rejects the drama of interventions and tough love in favor of kindness, positive reinforcement, and motivational and behavioral strategies to help their loved ones move beyond addiction.
The One Church One Read fall selection, A Man Called Ove by Fredrick Backman, is available for check-out in the OSL Library. Join in the book discussion on Sept. 24, at 10:00 a.m., in the Office Conference Room.
OSL Night at Wild Water West will be Aug. 15, from 4:00 to 8:00. Everyone who brings select school supplies to benefit The Banquet’s Project S.O.S. will receive $5 admission. (Find a list of qualifying supplies at the Information Center.) There won’t be an OSL meeting place at Wild Water West—just find your friends there and have some fun.
The summer’s final Emerge Youth Group fire will be on Wednesday, Aug. 16, at 7:15 p.m., at the OSL fire pit. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on. Snacks will be provided!

The next monthly outdoor worship service will be on Sunday, Sept. 3, at 8:45 a.m., weather permitting. If weather doesn’t permit, an attempt will be made on the following Sunday.

OSL’S Organ Recital Series returns in August. Recitals will be held on Wednesdays, from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m., followed by a light lunch. Confirmation orientation for sixth graders and their parents or caring adults will be on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 6:00 p.m., in Fellowship Hall. You will receive information about the program, expectations for participation, and opportunities to serve and lead, and you will have the chance to ask questions.

Are you the mother or father of a two-year-old? Then you’re invited you to the Welcome to Church Milestone, on Aug. 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. After a light lunch, the group will move through the building, taking pictures of your child at meaningful places, which will be made into a forever book for you to read to your child in the years to come. Join Pr. Sami at the Samaritan's Feet: Back to School event on Aug. 19, from 8:00 a.m. to noon, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1700 E. 6th St. OSL volunteers will be part of greeting, washing feet, and giving new shoes to over 700 area students who otherwise would not have them. The 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering will be June 26 through July 2 in Houston, Tex., for youth in grades 8 through 12 in the 2017–2018 school year. An interest meeting for OSL students and parents is coming up on Sunday, Aug. 20, at 5:30 p.m., in the Youth Room. Dinner will be provided.
Parents of children through age three are invited to the Noah’s Ark Party Open House on Sunday, Aug. 27, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. You’ll be introduced to the parent/child Frolic room and experience the Noah’s Ark story stations to see how this weekly hour together will empower you to infuse faith into everyday play. Plan to be there at 9:30, 9:45, or 10:15 for a brief presentation. A small snack will be served.
Students and teachers: Bring your backpack with you to any worship service on Aug. 27 to receive a backpack blessing and small gift from OSL as you prepare for a new school year.
The Women’s Fall Retreat is coming up, on Sept. 22 and 23, at Joy Ranch, near Watertown. The weekend will focus on “Mindfulness and Your Faith,” with Pr. Cindy Hoy as facilitator.
