A congregational meeting will be held on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 12:15 in The Gathering Place, for the purpose of voting on a recommendation from the Congregation Council to extend a call to Pr. Justin Kosec to serve as OSL’s Pastor of Outreach and Communication. A light lunch will be served.
CPR/AED and first-aid training for ushers, deacons, Sunday and Wednesday School Teachers, and all interested OSL Members and staff will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19, in The Gathering Place West. Men’s Bible Breakfast will meet on Friday, Oct. 20, at 6:30 a.m., in The Gathering Place, for food, Bible study, and fellowship.
Join other OSL couples for The Art of Marriage: A Biblically Centered Study of God’s Design for Marriage, a six- to seven-week small-group series, continuing this Sunday between worship services, in the Office Conference Room. A video will be shown with discussion to follow. This series is open to newlyweds through “seasoned” married couples. Contact Laura Wong, 582-4212, with questions.
A celebration of Elise Hasche, OSL Youth Director for the past five years, will take place next Sunday, Oct. 22, in The Gathering Place, between worship services. Come for breakfast and cake, and greet Elise and Ben as they move into this time of transition. Elise’s last day on staff will be Oct. 31.
Welcome Pr. Heidi Binstock back to OSL this Sunday, as she shares an update on WestSide Lutheran at worship services and at 10:00 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. With Pr. Heidi here, Pr. Tim Lemme will be helping to lead worship at WestSide.
Confirmation Banquet and Rehearsal will be this Sunday, Oct. 15. Meet in the Youth Room at 5:00 p.m. for rehearsal and group picture. The banquet will begin at 6:00, in The Gathering Place.
Immigration: Myths and Realities will be presented this Sunday, Oct. 15, at 10:00 a.m., in the Friendship Room. Jennifer Lunder, Ayuda coordinator, and Cari Lee Skogberg Eastman, local author and researcher, will conduct the forum, which will offer participants an opportunity to study research-based truths about immigration, recognize myths and misperceptions about our immigrant neighbors, and better understand how members of faith communities are called to respond to immigration-related issues.
The OSL Library Fall Book Sale is next weekend! The sale will run from noon to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21 and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22, in the Friendship Room. A large selection of children’s and adult fiction and nonfiction books, CDs, and DVDs will be for sale. Donation will be accepted through Thursday, Oct. 18. Be sure to bring the books inside the Library during business hours rather than place them outside the Library.
Children, youth, and adults are invited to participate in Stick Together, the OSL Library’s intergenerational fall reading program. Each day you check out items, you will receive a treat and a colored sticker that will be added to the “Stick Together with God, Family, and Friends” mosaic, which will reveal one of God’s blessings in our lives.
Join Pr. Sami for a six-week Bible study based on the book Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church by N. T. Wright, on Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m., through Nov. 7, in the Office Conference Room. Through video, discussion, and personal application, we will explore the scriptures to gain an exciting new vision for our lives on earth in light of our future in heaven. You are invited to purchase the book, but it is not necessary in order to appreciate the course. Sign up at the Information Center.
Gather with OSL members and others from across the South Dakota Synod to commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation in worship on Nov. 1, at 7:00 p.m., at the Sioux Falls Arena. More information and a link to register for free tickets may be found at sdsynod.org/reformation500.
All singers (grade nine and older) are welcome to join the adult choir for the Reformation 500 worship service on Nov. 1, at 7:00 p.m., at the Sioux Falls Arena. Dr. Paul Nesheim from Augustana University will conduct, and an anthem written for this event will have its premiere. There will be one mass rehearsal at the Arena, at 4:00 on Nov. 1; OSL singers have begun rehearsing on Wednesday evenings, at 6:30, in the Choir Room.
Partners at the Cross: The Music of Rachel Kurtz, a concert to benefit Prison Congregations of America, will be held at OSL on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 7:00 p.m. Tickets ($25, adult; $10 student) may be purchased from PCA, PO Box 1335, Sioux Falls, SD 57101, or online at prisoncongregations.org.
Lutheran Men in Mission meets on the third Saturday of each month, at 8:30 a.m., in the Office Conference Room, for an hour of Bible study, breakfast, and fellowship. Come to the next meeting, on Oct. 21.
Everyone is invited to the OSL Sioux Falls Rocks Cross+Gen event on Oct. 22, from 10:00 to 10:50 a.m. Come paint rocks with pictures, Bible verses, etc., to join in the fun, which involves hiding rocks in the community for others to find and bless someone’s day. Rocks have been found in parks, cancer centers, and even OSL’s Healing Garden. This special event is in lieu of Sunday School that morning. All children younger than grade six must be with a caring adult.
Sanaa Abourezk, a gourmet chef, restaurateur, author, and nutritionist, will share her talents at a Mediterranean Style Cooking Event on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 6:00 p.m., in the Friendship Room. A free public lecture, “The Loneliness Epidemic: Connecting Health and Faith,” will be presented at OSL on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Discover the medical and spiritual links to loneliness and join in the discussion about new and inspiring community-based solutions.
