Something to Draw You In
by Jodie Nielsen
Have you read the monthly Gather magazine, published by the Women of the ELCA? If you are an active member of WELCA and partake in your Circle Bible Study, the magazine is not new to you; but if you aren’t actively involved in WELCA, then this magazine is something that might just draw you in!
I must admit that I didn’t read it until taking on the role of vice-president of OSL’s WELCA. I had no idea what I was missing! All articles focus around a central theme—this month’s is Hospitality for All. Julie Kanarr writes in Gather’s May devotional, “Practicing good hospitality involves becoming aware of our own biases and examining our assumptions. Like Eli, we are challenged to listen with a spirit of openness to others’ perspectives. Like Hannah, we are called to pray and speak the truth with courage on behalf of ourselves and others. Sharing stories can build understanding and dismantle barriers of mistrust. Interrupting patters of criticism and judgment can help to cultivate environments where all are genuinely welcomed as children of God.” If you don’t have a subscription to the magazine, a few copies are available in the OSL Library. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.” Hebrews 13:1–2
2017 Unit Wide Mission Project. Thank you to those who support our annual Sweet Sale and Pie and Lefse Sale. All money raised from these sales support our Unit Wide Mission Project. The 2017 Mission Project funds were used to support Simon Says Give, Family Visitation Center, and OSL’s TV Ministry. A portion of the funds were also used for supplies for Comfort Bags, for those going through cancer, and OSL’s children’s activity bags. WELCA’s 2018 Unit Wide Mission Project is #kidsareGod’s gift.
WELCA’s Annual Mother’s Day Luncheon will be on Saturday, May 5, at 11:00 a.m. in The Gathering Place, with Dee Dee Raap presenting “Love Makes the Journey Great.” If this year didn’t work for you, made a mental note to join us next year—it’s always near Mother’s Day!
