MSYG–Middle School Youth Group
For our last MSYG event of the summer, we will be gathering in Fellowship Hall for a night of Cookies & Canvas on Wednesday, August 9, from 6:30 to 8:30. The cost will be $26.63 (includes tax) per canvas. Middle school students and their friends are welcome to sign up at the Youth Information Table in The Gathering Place, email Elise (ehasche@oslchurch.com), or register via the link at oslchurch.com.
Emerge Youth Group Fire
The last high-school Youth Group fire of the summer will take place on Wednesday, August 16, at the fire pit on the west side of the south parking lot, behind the fence, starting at 7:15 p.m., following Summer Blast. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on. There will be s’mores, as always!
ELCA Youth Gathering
OSL Youth are looking ahead to next summer’s big event, the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston, Texas! There will be an informational meeting on August 20, at which you will have an opportunity to pre-register to secure a spot on the trip. If you register at the informational meeting and make the $150 non-refundable deposit, you will get some added perks—not only a reduced trip price, but also a Gathering-themed Nalgene water bottle and two lunches paid for during the trip ($25 value). Stay tuned for details about time and place for the meeting!
Scavenger Hunt and Pizza
Who doesn’t love a little friendly competition that ends in a pizza party? Middle- and high-school students and families are invited to form teams (no bigger than what can fit inside a car with everyone in seatbelts) for a photo scavenger hunt around Sioux Falls. We will meet in The Gathering Place at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday, August 6, and have groups return by 5:00 p.m. While points are being tabulated, everyone will make their own pizza for dinner and join in some fellowship time. Lunch Is Served
Middle- and high-school students and families are invited to an evening of making sack lunches for the community in need here in Sioux Falls. We will meet at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1600 E. 12th St., at 5:30 p.m., on Monday, August 21, to put together around 300 lunches. We will end the evening with an ice cream social. Mentor Training
All parents and adults who have signed up to be small-group mentors for confirmation students this year will gather in the Youth Room on Wednesday, August 23, at 6:00 p.m., a brief training session. We will be done by 7:00 p.m.
What Do You Know?
Do you have specific knowledge or interest about a biblical or faith-based subject? Or a talent that God has blessed you with that you wish to share with students?
OSL Youth Ministry is looking for adults who would like to teach a two- to three-week course in something they are passionate about to a small group of confirmation students, in January 2018. Sound interesting? Contact Elise, ehasche@oslchurch.com or 336-2942, ext. 35, to discuss.
Scrip and Grocery Gift Cards
Stop by the Youth Information table in The Gathering Place on Sunday mornings, from 9:30 to 10:30, and see what kind of scrip gift cards you can order. Orders placed by 2:00 p.m. Monday will be available to pick up on Thursday afternoon in the Church Office, or at the Youth Information Table on Sunday mornings. OSL Youth continue to sell Hy-Vee and Fareway gift cards as well. All proceeds help Youth Ministry.
Faith Formation Notes
Sunday and Wednesday School kick-off will be on September 10 and 13. Register your child or children for Sunday or Wednesday School via the link at oslchurch.com/children. This will help ensure OSL has your current contact information and you will receive important information.
The “Welcome to Church” Milestone for two-year-olds will be on August 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. There will be a light lunch from 11:30 to 12:00, followed by taking pictures of your child throughout the building, which will be made into a book for your family to keep and read. Register for this event via the link at oslchurch.com/children.
Faith Formation Notes cont’d
The Back-to-School Backpack Blessing will be on August 27, at all worship services. Bring your backpack and receive a special blessing as you start the 2017–2018 school year!
All families with a child through age three are welcome to the Noah’s Ark Party on August 27, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., in the Heavenly Hangout. Come see the new engaging items in the room and hear about Frolic, the Sunday and Wednesday School education program your family will enjoy.
