Here’s your look at some of the things happening at Our Savior’s. Keep an eye on the Events page for info and registrations!
Photo of mailboxesDue to vacations, there’s no pastoral letter this week. Look for the next letter on or about August 5. In the meantime, you’ll find the previous weeks’ messages archived here.

Welcome Back screenshotOSL teamed up with our friends at Next Day Animations to produce this Welcome Back to OSL video that provides helpful guidelines for returning to worship, presented in a light, fun way suitable for kids as well as adults. If you’ve missed it in worship services, check it out here!

Book Sale photoOut of concern for staff, volunteers, and patrons, the OSL Library’s Fall Book Sale has been canceled. Donations of books, DVDs, and CDs will not be accepted during the pandemic, because of a lack of storage space.

Dear Church book coverOSL and Augustana University will host the Rev. Lenny Duncan, an ELCA pastor and the author of Dear Church: A Love Letter from a Black Preacher to the Whitest Denomination in the U.S., for two days of worship, teaching, conversation, and commitment-making. The OSL Library has 10 copies of Dear Church available for checkout.

Photo of Type CaseAs part of the effort to minimize the spread of COVID-19, printed bulletins will not be available at worship services. You are welcome to participate using your mobile device and the digital versions of the bulletins on the OSL website: Here is the bulletin for Saturday evening; for Sunday Festive worship; and for Sunday Celebrate worship.

Photo of Open SignThe OSL Library is open again! To protect everyone, the Library will be open for “Grab and Go” checkout only. Because of small spaces, over 12,000 offerings, and countless frequently touched surfaces, everyone will be required to wear masks and use hand sanitizer. Curbside checkout will remain available as long as people are utilizing the system. Library hours will be Sundays, 8:15 to 11:45 a.m.; Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, 9:00 a.m. to noon; Wednesdays, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; and the second Saturday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to noon and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Racial Justice displayMore than 35 new and recently published titles on inter-generational racial justice are on display in the front of the OSL Library. Be sure to have a look!

Photo of masksNPR’s global health and development blog, Goats and Soda, has published A User’s Guide to Masks: What’s Best at Protecting Others (and Yourself), an extensive guide to various kinds of masks…so extensive, in fact, that it’s too long to reproduce here, but you can check it out at NPR’s website.

OSL Website CalendarAs Our Savior’s carefully reopens the facility, be sure to check the OSL calendar at oslchurch.com/calendar for recently added events and activities. The website calendar is continuously updated, so visit it frequently!

Killers of the Flower Moon book coverTen copies and an audiobook of Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann, the Summer One Church One Read, are available for checkout in the OSL Library. This true-life murder mystery covers one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history. In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Indian Nation in Oklahoma. Then, one by one, they began to be killed off. This narrative nonfiction book is an indictment of the callousness and prejudice toward American Indians that allowed the murderers to operate with impunity for so long. The book discussion is planned for September 27 at 10:00 a.m., either in the Conference Room or via Zoom; questions for the discussion will be available in September.

Look and Learn Welcome Back displaysEven as everyone avoids lingering too long inside, take a moment to have a quick look at one of the Look and Learn Welcome Back displays in The Gathering Place, prepared by Caring Ministries. There are two identical displays, to help with social distancing. They feature four main actions everyone can take against the coronavirus. Displays will be changed from time to time, so be sure to give them a look-see when you’re passing through OSL.

Freddy's Faith-full friends screenshotKeep up with the latest in socially distant worship opportunities, faith formation, and more on OSL’s Facebook page! For instance:
• Every other Tuesday, “Freddy’s Faith-Full Friends” will teach you a song, enabling you to participate in Sunday worship from home.
• Each Thursday, Melissa Nesdahl, Director of Faith Formation, will include a Faith in the Home video, containing a scripture reading, contemplation/discussion questions, and an activity to help you act on and process the scripture reading.
Covid-19 screenshotOSL’s continuing response to Covid-19 is updated frequently as news becomes available, so be sure to check it often! You’ll find it on the OSL website and OSL’s Facebook page. Stay informed, and stay well!

Opportunities to Serve,
and Things to Note…

Face mask graphicOur friends at Susan B. Anthony Elementary School tell us they could make good use of child-sized masks for their students. OSL would like to contribute about 500 masks; the quilting group, Peace by Piece, has set up a table in the quilting room dedicated to the project, with fabric and supplies, available for you to pick up anytime the church is open. Stop in the Church Office and a staff member will let you into the room, where you can choose the material you wish and any supplies necessary. Questions? Contact Deb Harlan, 336-2942, ext. 48, or dharlan@oslchurch.com.

Campus Cupboard photoStudents will be returning to campus soon—you can support OSL’s Augustana Campus Cupboard by buying some, or all, of the items on the shopping list you’ll find here. You’ll find all the details you need there, too. Thanks for your support of OSL’s Augustana neighbors!

Food to You Mobile Food Pantry logoOSL supports the Food to You Mobile Food Pantry by donating various food items to help local families in need, and helping with food distributions. The item for July is macaroni and cheese; for August it will be pasta. Place your donations in the marked bins near the south entrance, by the Library.

Text Giving screenHave you tried OSL’s text giving option? It’s a quick, convenient way to help support OSL’s mission! Just text sharing to 73256 and follow the short instructions to make a gift to Our Savior’s. Thank you for your continued support!
