Opportunities to Help

Photo of Life Savers mintsRemember getting in trouble for chewing gum in school? Well, times have changed, and OSL is collecting chewing gum and mints for our friends at Susan B. Anthony Elementary School! SBA will be starting state and district testing soon, and studies show that gum or mints help stimulate thinking and better focus. Plus, kids love chewing gum in school! You can help by donating gum (preferably sugar-free) and mints (kids seem to like wintergreen best) by Sunday, March 28. There’s a bin near the south doors (next to the Campus Cupboard cart) for easy drop-off. Thanks for your help!
Meals on Wheels logoOSL’s Meals on Wheels program has openings for meal deliverers in the last weeks of March and April and all of May. If you would like to help with this important community program, call Sandy Garnas, 338-5440. Delivery is contactless, in keeping with COVID protocols, and training is provided.
Photo of two friendsShare the kindness of personal connections: OSL Caring Friends serve members who are homebound or in nursing homes or care facilities, to help them feel connected to the Body of Christ and to Our Savior’s. There currently are opportunities to serve as a Caring Friend at a facility in Sioux Falls. Find out more by contacting Deb Harlan, 336-2942, ext. 48, or
Photo of pen, paper, and coffeeMany OSL members are volunteering to be a pen pal for homebound members —why not join them? Send a card or note once or twice a month—that’s all there is to it! To sign up, contact Deb Harlan,

Food to You Mobile Food Pantry logoOSL supports the Food to You Mobile Food Pantry by donating various food items to help local families in need, and helping with food distributions. The item for March is hearty soup; for April it will be cereal. Always appreciated are toothpaste, shampoo, and deodorant for Hygiene Packs. Place your donations in the marked bins near the south entrance, by the Library.

Photo of Easter basketSt. Francis House is coordinating efforts to provide Easter baskets to children in need in the Sioux Falls community. St. Francis House guests will put baskets together for children staying in other programs in our community. You may help by dropping off used or new baskets, Easter grass, and individually wrapped candy or plastic eggs at St. Francis House, 210 N. Sherman Avenue. Nonprofit agencies will pick up baskets for distribution on April 2. For more information, contact St. Francis House: 334-3879 or

Project CAR logoProject CAR provides free rides to those who do not have transportation to get to their physical and mental health appointments, senior care, religious activities, and employment—and openings exist for volunteer drivers! Drivers may work as little as two hours per week, or as many as they would like, driving a safe, comfortable sedan. All current CDC guidelines are closely followed, with only one passenger in a car per ride, in the back seat, and both driver and passenger wearing a mask. Cars are disinfected between passengers. Project CAR is fully insured. Visit or call 332-2777 for more information.

Campus Cupboard photoThanks to your generosity, OSL’s Campus Cupboard is a big success—so much so that USF students have been invited to use it! Want to help out our university neighbors? Here are some options:
• Volunteer to help out—there are slots for two volunteers on each of these days: Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3:45 to 7:00 p.m.; Sunday mornings, 9:00 to 11:00. Procedures are in place to ensure everyone’s safety and minimal contact. Get in touch with Pr. Justin Kosec, 336-2942, ext. 44, or
• Buy some, or all, of the items on the shopping list you’ll find here. You’ll find all the details you need there, too.
• At the moment, because of the number of students who can use some help, these items in particular would be greatly appreciated: Ramen noodles; soup; toothpaste; shampoo; body wash; lotion; toothbrushes; peanut butter; jelly; mac and cheese; tuna or any kind of canned meat; pasta; pasta sauce ; cereal, hot or cold; all kinds of beans; rice; all kinds of vegetables

For your convenience, a cart is set up inside the south entrance during business hours, where you may leave your contributions. Thanks for your support of OSL’s Augie and USF neighbors!
