Making the Grade logoThere is no test-anxiety in the Kingdom of God! Making the Grade is the worship/preaching series for fall 2021, continuing this weekend. Jesus invites us to sit at his feet and to learn, first-hand, what it means to encounter God in the world.

Visit OSL’s 75th Anniversary Webshop to order 75th anniversary merchandise. The grand celebration will take place on October 31.
Food Ministry photoillustrationOSL Food Ministry Is Back in Action! OSL meals have been on hold for too, too long, because of…well, you know. But as of September 12, breakfast is back! And September 15 saw the return of Wednesday suppers! Check the menus (as always, subject to change) here.
2021 Fall Book Sale graphicThe OSL Library Fall Book Sale will make its post-pandemic return in October! Donations are being accepted now, so now’s a good time to start culling your collections! (The Library cannot accept textbooks, dictionaries or encyclopedias, or VCR tapes.) The sale will be held on October 2, 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Sunday, October 3, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in Fellowship Hall.

Photo of people holding handsOSL’s Memory Care Support Group for Caregivers meets weekly on Saturdays at 10:00 a.m., and has recently decided to continue outdoor meetings as weather permits. Meet on the south parking lot, near the picnic table under the trees. Bring your own lawn chair and beverages, and snacks if you wish. Masks will be optional since we physically distance ourselves outdoors. In case of bad weather, the group will meet in Fellowship Hall. Woman knittingKnitting can be good for you—it can relieve stress, be a good way to cope, and decrease the risk of cognitive impairment as you age. If you enjoy knitting, or would like to learn, join the OSL knitters for a fun and relaxing time knitting with others. The group will meet on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, at 9:30 a.m., in the Oasis Room. COVID protocols will be followed.

Open-house style falls prevention screening events will be held at several locations in Sioux Falls, where you may meet with specially trained nurses to receive a one-to-one screening and personal falls prevention recommendations. Jigsaw Puzzle Exchange photoLooking for the Jigsaw Puzzle Exchange? It’s been relocated to the Caring Ministries area, on new shelves made by the OSL Woodshop Crew. Come check it out—leave a puzzle, take a puzzle!

Matter of Balance logoA Matter of Balance an award-winning program designed to manage falls and increase activity levels, will return to OSL on Mondays, September 27 through November 15, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.. The program is for anyone who has restricted activities because of falling concerns or is interested in improving balance, flexibility, and strength. It’s shown at the Welcome Center and on monitors in the Sanctuary and Celebrate Center before worship services. And it’s posted to the OSL website as well, so if you haven’t been by for a while, or you’d just like a closer look, find the videos here!

Opportunities to Help

Campus Cupboard photoCollege has resumed, and so has OSL’s Campus Cupboard! Campus Cupboard helps OSL’s Augustana University and University of Sioux Falls neighbors with food items to help them get by when dining halls are unavailable. The Cupboard is now open on Wednesdays, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., and Sundays, from 8:45 to 11:00 a.m. Want to help? The Cupboard is currently in need of peanut butter; jelly; honey; any kind of beans; canned fruits; canned meats; beef jerky; pasta; pasta sauce; and shelf-stable juices and milk. You may leave your donations on the cart inside the south entrance. Thank you for your support of OSL’s Augie and USF neighbors!

Food to You Mobile Food Pantry logoAnother Food to You distribution is coming up, on Thursday September 23, with opportunities for OSL volunteers to help out. This will be a drive-through distribution, with volunteers having limited contact with recipients, at First Lutheran Church (Dakota Avenue at 12th Street). Masks are suggested and gloves will be provided. Full details and sign-up sheet are at the Welcome Center.

Photo of two friendsShare the kindness of personal connections: OSL Caring Friends serve members who are homebound or in nursing homes or care facilities, to help them feel connected to the Body of Christ and to Our Savior’s. Project CAR logoProject CAR is one of the participating nonprofits in The Human Race, a collaborative fundraising event sponsored by Health Connect of South Dakota, on Saturday, October 2. With two options available—a 1k walk or a 5k run—it’s a great way to help raise funds to support Project CAR’s work in providing rides and get some exercise at the same time. It’s a great event for families, seniors, singles, anyone! Visit Project CAR to register. OSL is a partner church with Project CAR.
Bluegrass at the BreweryJoin Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota for the third annual Folk Fundraiser – Bluegrass at the Brewery, on September 18. This year it will be held at Severance Brewery, 701 N. Phillips Ave., Suite 110. The “newgrass” band Armchair Boogie, from Madison, Wisconsin, will provide music. All proceeds go toward the Keep the Campfires Burning Appeal, which is helping LO recover financially from the COVID-19 pandemic. The fundraiser begins at 5:00 p.m., with music starting at 6:00. See you there!

Food to You Mobile Food Pantry logoOSL supports the Food to You Mobile Food Pantry by donating various food items to help local families in need, and helping with food distributions. The item for September is hearty soup; for October, any kind of cereal. Always appreciated are toothpaste, shampoo, and deodorant for Hygiene Packs. Place your donations in the marked bins near the south entrance, by the Library.
