The Second Saturday Movie, on Feb. 9, will be Lion, a true story of survival and triumph against incredible odds. Make a day of it with the movie, at 2:30 p.m., in the Holy Word Theatre, followed by worship at 5:00 in the Sanctuary, and supper in The Gathering Place afterward.
WELCA’s Sweets for Your Valentine sale will be this Sunday, Feb. 10, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., in The Gathering Place. Popular items in the past include chocolate, fudge, truffles, valentine sugar cookies, decorated cupcakes, puppy chow, and more! Funds raised will go toward WELCA’s 2019 Unit Wide Mission, “Everyday Samaritan–Helping Our Neighbors.”
Time grows short for having your OSL pictorial directory photo taken! The last sittings will be Feb. 21, 22, and 23. Sign up at the table on the west end of The Gathering Place, or online via the OSL website.
What was lost now is found, and is on the tables in The Gathering Place West! If you have missed something recently, be sure to stop by the Lost and Found table to see if it turned up there. Items remaining after two weeks will be donated.
OSL Food Ministry will serve breakfast this Sunday in The Gathering Place, starting at 9:30. This week’s menu: Cheese omelets. Wednesday dinner will be a Valentine’s Day taco bar. Thank you for contributing to the freewill offering to help cover expenses.

Wellness Wednesdays, an informal time of grace and encouragement with a balanced approach to overall well-being, continues at 6:00 p.m. in Caring Ministries, through Feb. 27. Register with Michelle, 336-2942, ext. 28, or A suggested donation of $5 will help defray the cost of the booklet used.

The Silent Auction is the primary fundraiser for OSL youth summer trips. This year, 45 students are signed up for trips to Colorado and Duluth, and everyone is getting ready for the Silent Auction, to run from Saturday, Feb. 16, through Sunday, March 3. OSL youths are also busy preparing for the Banquet and Talent Show on Sunday, March 3, at 5:00 p.m. Come for a fantastic meal and support OSL’s incredibly talented middle- and high-school students as they put on a show you will not soon forget. Connecting Faith and Life continues on Wednesdays, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., in the Friendship Room. Join Pr. Randy to discuss what the author and cultural observer Phyllis Tickle refers to as Emergence Christianity, a phenomenon of radical transformation that has been occurring in the church and in the world every 500 years for at least the past three millennia. Come join the conversation! A $15 donation will help cover the cost of course materials.
The OSL Library’s winter One Church One Read is Sold on a Monday by Krista McMorris. Inspired by an actual newspaper photograph that stunned the nation, Sold on a Monday is a powerful novel of love, redemption, and the unexpected paths that bring us home. Check out a copy in the Library, then join in the discussion on March 24 at 10:00 a.m. in the Conference Room.

A Little Further Out...

Love You to Pieces Cross+Gen Event will be on Feb. 17, from 10:00 to 10:50 a.m., in Fellowship Hall. Decorate a mat with markers or jewels and bedazzle a frame with puzzle pieces to your liking. All are welcome to make one for yourself or a loved one! This event will be in lieu of Sunday School and MSYG on that day. Students grade five and younger must have a parent or caring adult present.
“The Holy Spirit” will be the topic of the next Friendship Club, on Feb. 19, at 10:30 a.m., in the Friendship Room. Dr. Richard Swanson, Professor of Religion, Philosophy, and Classics at Augustana University, will be the guest speaker. Following the presentation, everyone will move to The Gathering Place for lunch and fellowship. Don’t miss it—and bring a friend!
Come out to the Premier Center for OSL Night with the Stampede and Wiener Dog Races, on Saturday, Feb. 23. Watch those tiny paws scamper across the ice and cheer on your favorite! The game starts at 7:05 p.m.; tickets are available in The Gathering Place on Sunday mornings, or in the Church Office during the week, for $15 each, with $5 from every ticket going to support Youth Summer Trips. Mental Health First Aid is the initial help given to someone who may be developing a mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis. It is not a substitute for professional help, but may help in stabilizing the person until appropriate professional assistance is engaged. The third annual Chili Cook-Off/Cupcake Walk will be on Feb. 24, at noon, in The Gathering Place. Stir up your favorite chili recipe and either enter it for judging or just bring a pot to share. Not a fan of chili? Bring your favorite soup to share! (Soup will not be judged.) A secret panel will award first-, second-, and third-place honors. Everyone will vote on the People’s Choice Award. And, as usual, a cupcake walk will be held during the event. Profits will go to Mission: Possible. Sign up at the Information Center.

Be a Sweetheart—consider volunteering as a Caring Friend! Caring Friends expands OSL’s visitation program to members who are homebound or are in nursing homes or care facilities. There are opportunities at Edgewood Vista, Luther Manor, Good Samaritan Village, Primrose, Covington, and Southridge in Sioux Falls, and Good Samaritan in Canton. Roll Call Update: The challenge was for OSL members to donate 1,000 rolls of toilet paper in January for Necessities for Neighbors’ February distribution. Instead, you donated 2,784 rolls—nearly three times the goal! Thank you for helping neighbors with necessities that SNAP does not cover.
There’s still time to help with the next Food to You Mobile Food Pantry distribution, on Feb. 21 at Augustana Lutheran Church, 235 N. Prairie Ave. Sign up at the Information Center. Youth (middle-school and older) are welcome, with adults. Contact Jack Dyvig, 351-1889, with questions.
OSL supports the Food to You Mobile Food Pantry by donating various food items throughout the year, which will be used by local families in need. The food item for February will be pasta; for March it will be hearty soup. Donations may be placed in the marked bins near the south entrance, by the Library.
Hospital Visitation is a vital ministry that lets OSL members know they matter to both God and their church family. Opportunities exist for you to volunteer, and training will be provided! Contact Pr. Tim Lemme, or 336- 2942, ext. 19, or Deb Harlan, or 336-2942, ext. 48, for details.

Youth and Family Notes

High School ESCAPE Lock-In will run from 8:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, to 7:00 a.m. on Saturday. This lock-in will focus on everyday struggles, while engaging in fun activities and games. It’s time for four- and five-year-old preschool students to sign up to carry plush Jesus for their Walk with Jesus Milestone! Register your child via this SignUpGenius link. When your child has plush Jesus, you will take photos and fill out an info sheet about activities shared, to be used for a video that will be shared in worship on March 31.
Fourth-graders’ Apostles’ Creed Milestone will be this Sunday, Feb. 10. Students and their parents or other caring adult will celebrate the milestone during the 8:45 a.m. Celebrate worship service, then go to Family Time with Pr. Sami in the Friendship Room at 10:00, where you will create a photo frame memory highlighting your belief. Family Time is in lieu of Sunday School for fourth graders that morning.
All students age four through fifth grade will sing in 8:45 a.m. Celebrate worship on Feb. 10. Please show your child(ren) where you will be sitting in worship, then take him or her to the Labyrinth Room to warm up.
