The Library Committee has selected Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens as its Summer One Church One Read title. Where the Crawdads Sing is an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps. Check out one of the 11 copies available in the Library, then join the discussion on Sept. 22, at 10:00 a.m., in the Library.
The time is now! If you’ve been considering joining Prs. Randy and Shelly Gehring on their scheduled trip to Greece and the Passion Play in Oberammergau in 2020, now is the time to register. Tickets to the Passion Play are now in very short supply. To secure your place on this trip of a lifetime, contact Pr. Randy, rgehring@oslchurch.com or 336-2942, ext. 11.

A Little Further Out...

There will be no Saturday evening worship service on June 1, because OSL is again hosting the South Dakota Synod Assembly that weekend, and the bishop-election process may run long. The Saturday worship service will resume as usual on June 8, at 5:00 p.m., in the Sanctuary.
The OSL Library’s summer reading program, “A Universe of Stories,” will run from June 2 through Aug. 4. Each day they check out items, children, youth (through high school), and adults will receive a treat. In addition, the one who reads the most books in each age group during the program will receive a $15 gift card. Throughout the program, the Library will track and display the number of books each patron reads on stars on the “Universe of Stories” bulletin board. Each patron will also “testify” how God speaks to them through books by writing on their “planet,” posted on the bulletin board.
Come celebrate Pr. Don Lehmann’s 80th birthday and 30 years of service at OSL, on Sunday, June 2, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., in The Gathering Place. The program will begin at 2:45, and refreshments will be served. Contact the Church Office, 336-2942, if you plan to attend; cards may be sent to OSL.
Dust off those running or walking shoes and get ready for the second Faith in Motion 5k Fun Run/Walk, on Saturday, June 8. The walk will begin and end at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, starting at 8:30 a.m., with treats and fellowship at the church afterward. This event is sponsored by First, Gloria Dei, East Side, Our Savior’s, Spirit of Joy, and Peace Lutheran churches as a fundraiser for Lutherans Outdoors. Register (required) at the Information Center or via losd.org. A suggested donation of $10 for individuals or $25 for families is encouraged.

Opportunities and Things to Note...

The Love in Action Core Ministry Team invites a few individuals interested in a service trip to Rosebud, to help build ramps, from June 20 through June 22. Participants will construct about four ramps to give elders much-needed handicap access to their homes. Spots are limited, so contact Pr. Justin ASAP if you’re interested: jkosec@oslchurch.com or 336-2942, ext. 44.
You can be a part of the Summer Food Service Program in two ways. First, you can volunteer! Volunteers help wipe down tables between busloads of children, help the littlest ones with their trays, and welcome all guests. There also are opportunities for volunteers to read stories and lead other activities you enjoy. You can participate as your schedule allows. Second, if you are 21 or older, you may apply to work as the part-time Site Coordinator, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day. The Site Coordinator is responsible for keeping track of the number of meals served and other administrative details. Contact Barb Haugan, bhaugan@oslchurch.com or 336-2942, ext. 23.
The summer project for OSL’s Peace by Piece quilting ministry will be to make quilts and lap robes for veterans at the VA Hospital, and others in need. If you have red, white, and blue cotton fabric and are looking to find a new home for it, your donation would be welcome! Leave it in the labeled bin near the Library, or in the Church Office. If you need to have it picked up, call Marilyn Quam (323-5545) or Suzie Rusch (334-9012).
OSL TV Ministry has volunteer opportunities for all worship services! This is a fun, easy job, the TV Ministry crew is great to work with, and thousands of people throughout the region (and online) are impacted by this outreach ministry. Contact Pr. Justin (jkosec@oslchurch.com or 336-2942, ext. 44), or just stop by TV Ministry (lower level) on a Sunday morning.
OSL supports the Food to You Mobile Food Pantry by donating various food items to help local families in need, and helping with food distributions. The item for June, tuna and tuna helper, may be placed in the marked bins near the south entrance, by the Library.
