OSL Responds to COVID-19
Pastoral Letter #6
Week of 22 April 2020
Dear OSL Family,
Together we are finding our way through these extraordinary days. Though we are not able to gather in person for worship and fellowship, we thank God “every time [we] remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of [our] prayers for all of you.” (Philippians 1:3)
Farewell Pr. Sami
Last week we sent Pr. Sami and Susanna on their way to Virginia for what will surely be a joyous reunion with Josh and the beginning of a new chapter in their lives together. Their temporary address for the foreseeable future is: 3824 Banyan Grove Lane, Apt. 304, Virginia Beach, VA 23462.
As things around us constantly change – seemingly on a daily basis! – and any details about what the future will look like are elusive at best, ministry continues here at Our Savior’s as we look for and develop new ways of proclaiming Christ and connecting faith to everyday life.
One of those recent ways was the brainchild of our Caring Ministries Coordinator, Deb Harlan. She envisioned a parade of honking cars and waving drivers making their way around the city to the various care facilities where many of our members reside. In her mind, this would be a great way to show them all how much we love them and that they are not alone even as they remain sequestered for the sake of their health.
Well, last Sunday approximately 40 cars of energetic well-wishers showed up at the church parking lot ready to spread cheer and goodwill to our elders. KELO covered the story, which you can find here.
Also, be sure to check out our Facebook page to find a wide variety of ways to engage in ministry and community in these weeks of remaining separated.
What If I Need Help?
First, if you are having trouble right now, reach out to someone. If you are having trouble with bills or rent or food, contact 211 or visit www.coronahelpsf.com. If you are struggling with anxiety, it is a legitimate struggle, and your healthcare providers have resources for you. If you need help but don’t know where to start, call us here at the church. We will point you in the right direction.
If you need a mask, we have some of those to share. If you need food, check out the weekly Feeding South Dakota food distribution at the fairgrounds on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:00 – 8:00 p.m. and the Faith Temple Food Giveaway at the fairgrounds every Friday, 4:00 – 5:30 p.m.
Our Stewardship Enables Ministry to Thrive
In the next couple of weeks, we will be reflecting together on the call God gives to us to be part of this community of faith called Our Savior’s and to support its mission with our time, talents, and treasures. Keep your eyes open for materials that will be arriving in your mailbox soon. When they arrive, we encourage you to consider prayerfully how you will continue providing this life-changing support in the year ahead. In worship on May 10, together we will make our offering to God by completing our Estimate of Giving cards and asking God’s blessing on this ministry that we share.
Given the ongoing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have extended the cancelation of all in-person activities at the church through May 17. The south entrance of the church is unlocked Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon to allow for mail delivery, and the Church Office is open with minimal staff during those hours.
A Final Word
May the unfading peace of the risen Christ find its way into your lives especially now, and may you find ways to share that same peace with everyone you can.
Be well and press on,
Your pastors at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church,
Rev. Randy Gehring,
Rev. Tim Lemme,
Rev. Justin Kosec
