God, Push It More!
Joan Bacon

After that on-again, off-again spring, we are ready for June! Now neighbors emerge from their homes, not sealed in cars but sandal-footed in front yards. Dog walkers walk unbundled. Kids bloom in parks, pools, and playgrounds.

However, not everyone will greet June with joy: life’s problems don’t honor the seasons. This summer, some adults will find it difficult to emerge and unbundle. And sadly, some kids in our city will struggle to bloom.

In Ordinary Resurrections: Children in the Years of Hope, the author Jonathan Kozol shared what he learned from young children attending inner-city schools in New York City. Children like Stephanie. When Kozol asked Stephanie what might make the world a better place, she replied, “What would make the world better is God’s heart. I know God’s heart is already in the world. But I would like if he would …push the heart more into it. Not just halfway. Push it more!”

Long before Stephanie, psalmists exhorted God: “How long, O Lord, will you hide your face from me? Why do you stand far off? Why do you sleep, O Lord? Attend to me, and answer me. Rise up, come to our help!” With little girl words, Stephanie echoed those grownup psalmists: “I know you are there, God, but come on! We need your heart! Not just half way. Push it more, God!”

If you are going through a difficult time this summer, talk to Pr. Tim Lemme or Deb Harlan in the Church Office, 336-2942, about finding a Stephen Minister who will be there for you.
