Faith Formation Notes
The Kindergarten Caring Conversations Milestone is October 7. Students and their parents will receive a blessing during the 8:45 a.m. Celebrate worship service, then, at 10:00, will have Family Time with Pr. Sami in the Friendship Room, and make a conversation cube together. Kindergartners in Sunday School will not attend education that day, since they will be in Family Time with their parents.
All Sunday and Wednesday School Students age four through grade five will sing at the 8:45 a.m. Celebrate worship service on October 7.
Youth Ministry Notes
New Youth Ministry Team
Help welcome new mentors to OSL High School Youth, who also will assist with youth group and events:
Moriah Goddard, a junior at Augustana University studying Nursing, is returning for her second year at OSL. Moriah is from southern California and describes herself as empathetic, passionate about sports, and very excited about youth group connections this year.
Mollie Varpness just finished the summer as the Head Intern here at OSL, and is excited to continue at OSL this year. Mollie is a junior at Augustana University, studying Religion and Communications with plans to continue for a Master of Divinity degree and ordination in the ELCA. “The students have been amazing this summer, and I can’t wait to continue and grow with them,” Mollie says. “Thank you for this opportunity.”
Elle Weg, a senior at Lincoln High School, is planning to attend Luther next year to begin a degree in Youth Ministry with plans to be a youth director. Elle has volunteered at Ingham Okoboji Bible Camp for the past two summers and has a passion for teaching kids about Jesus while having a lot of fun at the same time.
We are excited to have all three young women on our team and to see them connect with and grow youth ministry here at OSL.
Middle School Youth Group. Students in grades six through eight are welcome to join us on Sunday mornings, from 10:00 to 10:50, in the Youth Room. Grow in faith through games, activities, and opportunities to serve, all while learning about God and having a lot of fun.
High School Youth Group. All students in grades nine through 12 are welcome to join us on Wednesday nights, from 7:00 to 9:00, in the Youth Room. Youth group is a little different each week, as we explore various topics through worship, study, prayer, and service, as well as games, activities, and off-campus activities such as bowling, trampoline parks, hayrides, mall scavenger hunts, and much, much more.
Confirmation class for sixth- through eighth-graders meets every Wednesday, from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m. Start in Fellowship Hall for large-group time with Pr. Ninth-Grade Confirmation Banquet. On Sunday, October 7, at 5:00 p.m., ninth-graders will gather to celebrate their confirmation milestone with their family, friends, and baptismal sponsors. Meal with family begins at 6:00.
Football Night with John. High-school youth are invited to join John on October 5 as he attends the Lincoln Patriot football game and checks out the world-famous Sioux Falls Lincoln High School Patriot Marching Band. Come out and enjoy the fun atmosphere while cheering on your fellow youth group members playing in (and leading) the band.
Country Apple Orchard. Wednesday and Sunday School, confirmation, and high school youth group students and their families are invited to join us at Country Apple Orchard on Wednesday, October 17, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., for apple picking, train rides, bounce houses, hayrides, and more. No cost for this event. Apples, cider, and other food will be available for purchase from the country store. Children in fifth grade and younger must be accompanied by a caring adult.
Middle School Sunday FUNday Event will be on Sunday, October 21, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Middle-school youth are invited to join the fun at Heartland Country Corn Maze for some corny fun. Cost is $8 (cash or check only), and if we find all the checkpoints, we get a free treat.
High School Haunted Corn Maze Event will be on Saturday, October 29, at 7:00 p.m. High-school youth will be heading to the Heartland Country Haunted Corn Maze for a scary good time. Cost is $10 (cash or check only).
Youth Group Summer Trips 2019
Service Learning Camp, Duluth, Minnesota. Middle- and high-school students are invited to join us July 13 through 19 as we head to the North Shore of Minnesota to serve the people of Duluth. The cost is $400, with a $100 non-refundable deposit. Sign up at the Youth Table in The Gathering Place and the Youth Room, or contact John for more information or with any questions.
Compass Point Adventure Experience, Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Colorado. High-school students are invited to join us June 15 through 22 as we head to Rainbow Trails Lutheran Bible Camp, one and a half hours west of Pueblo, Colorado. We will embark on a four-day backpacking adventure to the peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
