Our Story
Our Savior’s Lutheran Church: We are a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, committed to engaging an ever-changing world as followers of Jesus. All are welcome to come and work on the faith with others spending a lifetime figuring out what God is calling us to do as we feed the hungry, clothe the naked and visit those in prison. (Matt. 25).
Our story began some eighty years ago! Our first service was held in 1946 in the chapel of Old Main on the Augustana campus, led by founding pastor Howard M. Blegen, who served until 1974. The church opened at 28th and Summit in 1947 in a converted WWII army chapel.
The current building at 909 W. 33rd Street was built in 1958, with dedication of the current expansion in 2010, including Sanctuary, Celebrate Center, Gathering Space, Chapel, Gymnasium, Fellowship Hall, Friendship Room, Choir Room, Youth Room, and multi-purpose Sunday School and other meeting rooms.
Current worship times: two traditional services in the Sanctuary, with organ and piano, on Saturdays at 5:00 pm and Sundays at 11:00 am (10:30 in summer); and a contemporary service in the Celebrate Center with praise band Sundays at 8:45 am. If you’re new to Our Savior’s, we simply say to you, our doors are wide open – to you, and to the beauty and needs of God’s world. All are welcome to come and be a part of this people who are committed to being a people “planting faith, nurturing hope and sharing God’s love!”
